CHANGING MATTER

DAY 2 INSPIRED BY MADELYN PHAM

WARM-UP (7 MIN)

In your notebook, always include the date, the lesson title, and do the warm-up task associated to that date.

Task:  *Complete the Musical Warm-Up:  "What is that?"*

WARM-UP DISCUSSION (3 MIN)

*What are some characteristics of physical and chemical changes?*

LAB:  *ELEPHANT'S TOOTHPASTE* (15 MIN)

In your notebook, always include the date, the lesson title, and do the warm-up task associated to that date.  FOR LABS, IF NO SHEET IS PROVIDED, YOU MUST RECORD STEP TITLES AND YOUR ANSWERS IN YOUR SCIENCE NOTEBOOK

Purpose:  To understand the energy in chemical changes.  During Chemical Changes, energy is released or absorbed.  If energy is released, heat (Thermal Energy) and/or light will be give off.  This is Exothermic.  When energy is absorbed and stored in a new substance, things get cold.  This is Endothermic.

Materials:  (MAKE SURE YOU DO THIS IN A SINK!)

  • A plastic bottle

  • 20-volume hydrogen peroxide

  • 1 Tablespoon of dry yeast

  • 3 Tablespoons of warm water

  • Liquid dish washing soap

  • Food coloring

  • Small cup

  • Safety goggles

  • Large and Small Graduated cylinders

Procedure:

  1. STEP 1:  Pour 100mL of the 20 Volume Hydrogen Peroxide into the bottle.

  2. STEP 2:  Add 8 drops of food coloring to the bottle.  Do not waste any!  Too much will ruin the reaction.

  3. STEP 3:  Add 20 mL of Dish Soap to your bottle.

  4. STEP 4:  In a separate small cup, combine the warm water and the yeast together and mix for about 30 seconds.

  5. STEP 5:  IN THE SINK, pour your yeast mixture into the bottle.  Feel free to touch the result with your hands, BUT DO NOT PUT YOUR FINGERS IN THE BOTTLE.

THE NOTES:  DAY 1 VOCABULARY (10 MIN)

*Write these down in your notebooks!*

Energy - the ability to do work or cause change.

Temperature - a measure of the average energy of random motion of particles of matter.

Thermal Energy - the total energy of all of the particles in an object.

Endothermic Change - a change in which energy is taken in

Exothermic Change - a change in which energy is released

KEY CONCEPT - Every chemical or physical change in matter includes a change in energy.

EVALUATION (10 MIN)

We'll wrap it up here with today's assessment in your learning management system.  Feel free to study your notes and/or the videos below.  We always recommend viewing the videos the night before the lesson.
