Lesson 4:  Chemistry Recap From Middle School

Reactions | Mixtures | Acids | Bases

  1. Mixture - made of two or more substances - elements, compounds, or both - that are together in the same place but are not chemically combined.

  2. Heterogeneous mixture - A mixture where you can see the different parts.

  3. Homogeneous mixture - A mixture where the substances are so evenly mixed that you can’t see the different parts.

  4. Solution - an example of a homogeneous mixture.  It usually is made of a solid (Solute) and a liquid. (Solvent)

  5. Acid - Solution or pure substance that is sour, pH<7, and gives off H+ Ions

  6. Base - Solution or pure substance that is bitter, pH>7, and gives off OH- Ions

  7. Energy - the ability to do work or cause change.

  8. Temperature - a measure of the average energy of random motion of particles of matter.

  9. Thermal Energy - the total energy of all of the particles in an object.

  10. Endothermic Reaction - a reaction in which energy is taken in

  11. Exothermic Reaction - a reaction in which energy is released

DRAWING EXERCISE

IN YOUR NOTES

Follow the video, draw what you see and follow along.  It's okay to pause at parts, but the key is to listen in and understand the best you can.

PLAY:  TELL US THE PH OF VOMIT AND BATTERY ACID!

PLAY:  BALANCE AN EQUATION!  SEE IF YOU CAN DO IT!
