RADIATION

LESSON 1:  THE ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM

WAVE PROPERTIES AND THE ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM

FOR YOUR NOTEBOOK:

Lesson 1:  Electromagnetic Spectrum

Key Terms:

  1. Electromagnetic Radiation - Transverse wave that transfers both electrical and magnetic energy.  (Doesn't require a MEDIUM)

    • Medium - matter that energy can travel through.

    • Transverse wave - wave that has perpendicular shaping in comparison to the motion of the wave.

  2. Origin - where the energy wave came from

  3. Crest - A peak in a transverse wave.

  4. Trough - A dip in a transverse wave.

  5. Amplitude - the distance from the origin line of the wave to a crest or trough

    • With radiation it's "Intensity"

  6. Wavelength - the distance between two corresponding parts of a wave.

    • Ex. Distance from 1 crest to the next crest

  7. Frequency - The number of complete waves that pass a given point in a given amount of time.

  8. Electromagnetic Spectrum - The entire organized diagram of different types of electromagnetic waves.

    • Shows that higher energy means higher frequency

Spectrum Features:

  • Gamma Rays

  • X Ray

  • Ultraviolet

  • Visible Light - ROYGBIV

  • Infrared

  • Microwave

  • Radio

Key Drawings:

  1. Make yourself a diagram of the EM Spectrum the button below is a good thing to base it off of.

    • Use the visuals below to add examples to your EM Diagram

  2. Make yourself a diagram of an electromagnetic wave.

    GAMMA RAY - CT SCAN

    X-RAY DENTAL VISIT

    ULTRAVIOLET AIR STERILIZER

VISIBLE LIGHT - THE COLORS WE SEE

    INFRARED - NON-ORAL NON-RECTAL THERMOMETER

    MICROWAVE - REMOTE TECHNOLOGY

    RADIO - SATELLITE AND COMMUNICATIONS
